The spectacular opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at China’s National Stadium. In order to create the beautiful lighting effects for these events, the power distribution system had to manage a large number of large-scale LED screens, stage lights, lifting screens, frequency converters and other non-linear loads. The resulting harmonically rich loads had to meet the Chinese power quality standard.
THE CHALLENGE
The spectacular opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at China’s National Stadium, also known as Bird's Nest. In order to create the beautiful lighting effects for these ceremonies, the power distribution system in the stadium distributed a large number of large-scale LED screens, stage lights, lifting screens, frequency converters and other non-linear loads. All harmonically rich, single and three phase loads. In order to meet the Chinese power quality standard GB/T14549-93, the voltage distortion of the facility needed to be reduced from an anticipated level of THvD 13% (Line-Neutral) to below THvD 5%. Without a harmonic solution the high voltage distortion could interfere with normal operation of the equipment and even cause equipment damage.
THE SOLUTION
Sinexcel’s engineering team consulted with the stadium’s infrastructure management to discuss the requirements and to gain a deeper understanding of the complex electrical load environment that would be operating at the peak times of the main events. It was determined that in order to establish a clean voltage environment for the electrical loads and ensure the normal stage lighting effect of the opening and closing ceremonies, Sinexcel installed a total of 5,200A of Sinexcel PRO Active Harmonic Filters in the Bird's Nest for harmonic mitigation using the advanced no-CT technology of the new series. They corrected the excessively high voltage distortion and partially mitigated current distortion as intended. This installation was one of the largest of its type in the world.
THE OUTCOME
After the installation of the Sinexcel PRO Active Harmonic Filters, the power quality problems in the entire electrical system were significantly improved. Across all the sub-sections of the stadium’s electrical infrastructure, the overall voltage distortion rate dropped from over 13% to 2%. The voltage waveform had changed from a state of severe distortion to a near perfect sine wave. This provided stability, reliability and flexibility to the electrical system with provisions for load and demand fluctuations. The opening and closing ceremonies were facilitated successfully without any harmonic related anomalies which contributed to a very successful Winter Olympic Games.

SINEXCEL PRO SERIES AHF TECHNOLOGY
The traditional Active Harmonic Filter is usually equipped with a set of external current transformers to detect current. The measured current signal is transmitted to a high-speed digital signal processor to analyse whether there is a harmonic current. The harmonic compensation current is then created using high speed power electronics. The PRO’s “no-CT technology” no longer needs to use a CT to detect the load current but still can achieve harmonic compensation, eliminating the connection of one or more sets of CTs. This can also reduce installation and construction costs by eliminating not just the CTs but associated costs such as panel tier space, contractor wiring expenses etc. and simplifying commissioning. This tech can quickly detect the THvD status in the power grid and provide a faster response time than traditional CT based methods in achieving a desired target. THvD<5%, 6.5% etc.

It’s been a pleasure working with Fuseco on this project. Initially, we thought that the power quality issues on this job were insurmountable. Fuseco conducted a power quality site audit and consulted with us to find a suitable solution that would work reliably in this challenging environment. The reactors and harmonic filters specified & supplied by Fuseco have been the perfect solution.

Just wanted to say thank you again to the Fuseco team. When presented with an electrical harmonics problem of this nature, I wasn’t sure how to approach it. You guys explained it in logical, scientific terms and expertly demonstrated the capability of your technology. It is now one month post-installation and I can say that the Active Filter is working well and the harmonics levels on this site are now negligible.
