The Cliff Head Oil Field Platform (Cliff Head) in located in the Perth Basin about 270 kilometres north of Perth and 12 kilometres off the coast of Dongara in Western Australia. Cliff Head resides in the Production License WA-31-L which covers 72km², and the oil field covers 6km² in the Commonwealth Exploration Permit WA-286-P. Cliff Head is located at a water depth of 15-20 metres and is an integral part of the region’s oil drilling infrastructure.

The Challenge

The maintenance crew observed that a previously installed Earth Leakage relay was giving unwanted “false” trips. This situation may be caused by faults with the relay’s internals or the CT being overwhelmed by load or inrush current. The Fuseco team were engaged to assist.

  • Operates on AC solidly grounded and AC resistance grounded systems. 
  • Microprocessor-based ground-fault relay for resistance and solidly-grounded systems. 
  • In addition to common systems, it is uniquely suited for use on systems with significant harmonic content.
  • Can provide main-plant protection, feeder-level protection, or individual-load protection. 
  • Proper current transformer selection provides the desired pickup range. 
  • The output contacts can be connected for use in protective tripping circuits or in alarm indication circuits.
  • The analog output can be used with a PLC or a meter.

The Solution

Fuseco analysed the information and electrical systems used on site and recommended the Littelfuse SE-701 relay due to it having very flexible trip settings plus an appropriate Stemar CT that can handle very high load current. All of our earth leakage relays have great performance and reliability and it was vital for correct safety and future reliability that the relay is correctly matched with the appropriate CT.

The Outcome

The SE-701 and Stemar CT were installed and the equipment was able to be bought online without the SE-701 tripping. Even though the SE-701 was recommended because of its flexible trip settings, the Cliff Head electrical maintenance crew were able to keep the trip setting at the low level they were trying to set on the other device but this time the relay did not “false” trip.  The client was extremely happy to have the relay set at the level they wanted and also for it not to trip as a result of high system or inrush currents.
